Paul’s glamour shot is gracing the pages of StartupNorth. The man loves his hardware! No really. He does. I will have to write up a little blog post about the Idée cluster. But in the meantime, drop by and read Jevon’s MacDonald piece. Vive Idée! and thank you Jevon – yes, we are up to some great things… that we will share soon soon.

Xcavator from CogniSign is one the latest additions to the visual search space.
CogniSign was started a couple of years ago by Lenny Kontsevich a research scientist studying cognitive psychology, human and computer vision, and artificial intelligence, and
and Bryan Calkins.

From their press release:

The xcavator product solution provides extremely compelling interactive photo
search capabilities, allowing consumers to naturally search photos based on visual
content. The key to xcavator‘s capabilities is its image recognition engine, powered
by the award-winning CogniSign Intelligent Image Recognition Technology. An
interactive interface in xcavator allows a user to pick key features of interest in a
photo, defining the type of similarity he or she wants to see in a search for more
photos. This empowers the user to specify extremely targeted search tasks for
collections of similar images.

They also blog here and have a series of one pagers describing their offerings here. And you can view a video demo and play with Xcavator here.

You boys are in excellent company. Welcome to the industry.

I am at Supernova for the next couple of days. I will be participating tomorrow in the search panel moderated by Chris Shipley of Guidewire Grop. The panel description is below. Search will be – no, it already is – the ultimate interface.

From Search to Eternity
[Moderator: Chris Shipley (Guidewire Group), Kapenda Thomas (CEO, Jookster), David Sifry (CEO, Technorati), Jim Lanzone (CEO, Ask.com), Leila Boujnane (CEO, Ideeinc.com)]

Search engines are the dominant interface for the Web today, and a huge force in driving economic activity online. What’s next for search? It seems unlikely that we have reached the end-point of significant technical or business evolution in this incredibly active area.

Our session will be followed by the Connected Innovators – this is a first for Supernova.

And we are on our way to Biarritz. Andy is right, it feels like we are going to the end of the world. I can’t imagine what it is going to be like for the Japanese or latin america participants. We are on our way to Paris via Montreal – all the Air Canada direct flights were sold out (you know it is summer and everybody loves Paris). Once in Paris we will take an Air France flight to Bordeaux and then a couple of hours drive to Biarritz. We could have flown direct to Biarritz from Paris but we prefer the adventure!

I am glad we are going to Biarritz to see friends, clients and our community and the lovely Sylvie Fodor otherwise…
