Now I wish I was flying back home today and landing on time to attend the 5th Toronto Photo Marathon. It is happening this evening and if you are around, Melina – an Idealists, since that’s what we call folks who work at Idée – is participating and she needs your vote! Last year’s event was a blast. So get out there.
The Toronto Marathon organizers basically put together an event where photographers are given 24 hours to produce a series of photographs for 12 themes. Each participant brings their camera and is given one 12 photo roll. They are also given 12 theme and need to take a single photograph for each one of the theme. Now, it goes without saying that this is not a digital contest: cameras used are not digital! Single shot! Scary really: I need to take 20-30 shots of the same item to get one decent shot, but that’s also because I just aim the camera and shoot – sometimes not even looking at the viewfinder.
So this evening (Saturday) you will all get to see what the participants photographs and you get to vote for the best ones or the ones you like the most.
This event has its roots in Brazil. The organizers in Toronto are Brazilians and they tell me that each year in Brazil, in the island city of Florianópolis, Brazilians load film in their cameras and listen to the radio to hear for the secret theme or subject to be broadcast live every few hours. They then race around the city capturing an image that meets the theme’s requirements. This has been going on for over a decade.
Today you too can enjoy a touch of Brazil in Toronto brought to you by Everton Souza and Lalo Porto.
